Detached house Rheintal
Where everyday life and architecture merge
The family had been considering plans for their own home for some time. In Switzerland, however, land prices are high, and building plots are scarce. So what could be more natural than considering a new build in the parents’ garden?
When building their new home, the clients placed their lively family life at the centre. The kitchen therefore forms the heart of the house, where the entire extended family comes together.
The new centre of the house and of family life is the open kitchen together with a large dining table. The architect and the client devoted great care to its design. They used wood as a contrast to the raw exposed concrete walls, and complemented it with a velvety linoleum on the cabinet surfaces.

For the floor, they chose Formpark in natural oiled oak. With the parquet’s different installation patterns, it was also possible to bridge the offset between the storeys within the house. As the dimensions of the Formpark elements match standard formwork panels, the architect used this design feature to structure the ceilings. With the same care, the architect and the client planned the entire material palette of the house. The effort paid off, as the house has become a popular meeting place for family and friends.
