A new home for the star: Mercedes-Benz Austria

Following the motto ‘All under one roof’, all of the branches of the company’s Austrian office at Mercedes-Benz-Platz 1, Eugendorf, were brought together, making the best use of the resulting synergies. Some 300 people share its 4000 m² office space. The training centre is across the street, adding a further 2000 m². Service and sales staff receive instruction in all new products at this facility. The training centre also has a canteen and a cosy coffeehouse-style bistro, offering employees snacks and coffee.

Flexible work: choose where you can do it better!
The options for setting up a flexible working environment are extensive: you can work at your normal workplace, in one of 50 meeting rooms, in countless lounge areas, cafe corners, or at huge shared-space tables. Even the CEO does without his own office: ‘I discovered this approach to work during my time in Scandinavia, and I love it. This makes interactions so much better and less complicated.’

One can be flexible in deciding where they would like to work. Ultimately, it is the quality of the work that matters, not the time the employee spends at their desk.

Marc Boderke, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Austria

A state-of-the-art building
The office complex was built based on the latest technical developments. For example, the ceilings are used for both the high-tech heating and cooling and sound insulation. In conjunction with acoustic panels on the walls, it delivers optimum noise absorption, despite the open room structure. The building's energy supply is provided by the local utility Nahwärme Eugendorf as well as a rooftop photovoltaic system.

A workplace by employees, for employees
The employees played a decisive role in the process of planning their new workplace. From office furniture design, sanitation facilities, kitchen equipment, flooring, wall colour and art, to preferences in the climate and lighting of the building, to favourite coffee varieties: the employees were actively involved in all of these decisions from the very start, and made a significant contribution to the creation of their new working space.

The inclusion of health aspects was another important element for the company's management team. For example, all desks were made to be electrically height-adjustable, because ‘Sitting is the new smoking!’ Furthermore, all photocopiers and printers were removed from individual workstations. Sustainability was also decisive in choosing the right flooring.

Choosing the right flooring
The project management saw two aspects as particularly important: the employees should feel well and comfortable in their working environment, and the floors there must be durable and sustainable. Finding a product that would stand up to the stress of heavy everyday use – in areas such as the cafeteria, the entrance and the staircases – was no easy task.

Nevertheless, assessments and discussions with the project team, the architects and the company management proved successful: the Casapark 1-strip-plank floor from Bauwerk’s Used-Look product line impressed everyone. The Fargo colour was chosen out of a palette of three. In combination with a natural-oiled surface, this floor is extremely well-protected, and suited for intensive use.
