Grading
Intensity of natural wood characteristics
Each parquet plank is unique and shows natural variations in colour and texture. Bauwerk Parkett classifies each plank using a specially developed grading index based on its appearance.
Natural wood characteristics
Every log, every board, and therefore every parquet plank is unique. Its distinctive appearance is shaped by natural wood characteristics: medullary rays create a subtle shimmering effect, visible depending on the cut through the tree’s ray cells. Light colour variations come from younger wood, known as sapwood, whose capillaries carry water up to the crown. Small and large knots, along with varying colour play, also give the parquet its individual character and define the look of each plank.

A Medullary rays
B Small knots, filled
C Sapwood
D Large knots, filled
E Colour variation
The grading index – for a harmonious parquet look
To achieve the desired look for a parquet floor, Bauwerk Parkett assigns each plank a grading index based on its wood characteristics. This index serves as a helpful guide when choosing the right parquet because grading is key to the floor’s overall effect.
The numbers 1 to 6 represent the different colour and structural characteristics of the wood, which may vary slightly depending on the wood species:
1 – very calm, uniform
2 – calm, balanced
3 – slightly lively
4 – naturally lively
5 – characterful, very lively
6 – very lively, rustic
A grading always combines several wood characteristics. Grading 13 means that all wood characteristics from 1 to 3 may be present. A grading 35, on the other hand, includes only characteristics 3 to 5.
