Residential building

Rustico Manno

In Tessin, rustico buildings were traditionally used by farmers, and today, for now at least, they have become the epitome of modern living. While on the outside, their architecture offers remarkable and robust masonry, on the inside, they impress with an exciting spatial structure, which mostly consists of wood.

In Tessin, rustico buildings were traditionally used by farmers, and today, for now at least, they have become the epitome of modern living. While on the outside, their architecture offers remarkable and robust masonry, on the inside, they impress with an exciting spatial structure, which mostly consists of wood.

Traditional and modern

The renovation of the old, empty building in the centre of Manno presented the architect Fabio Compagno with the special challenge of using the existing geometry of the former farmhouse as efficiently as possible, providing its residents with a layout that creates as much space and function as this building possibly can. The existing stone wall on the southern side of the structure was kept and reinforced, and the other walls were replaced with a modular wood structure, while a few existing openings were rearranged for better lighting. For the interiors, the architect and the owner of the property decided to make the wooden structure visible. As a result of this approach, the walls and ceilings, as well as built-in furniture and closets, were constructed using raw spruce panels.

Warmth and wellness

Cleverpark parquet was laid across the 90-square-metre living space as a fitting addition to the concept. "Like the rest of the building, the floor needed to be made out of wood. Sustainable, durable and healthy for living, it harmoniously blends into the general picture," Fabio Compagno explained, citing the reason for choosing parquet. "The Oak Sasso colour makes the floor gently stand out from the natural wall panelling. The grain of the wood isn’t excessively distinctive, while the material itself offers a pleasantly warm, tactile experience." Because there are plans to let the property out, the flooring had to be robust and easy to maintain, which is why additional protection from the innovative B-Protect® lacquer was opted for, so that the original look of the surface endures many years of use.
